The open enrollment period for individual health insurance coverage on healthcare.gov has started and will continue until January 15, the Insurance Division of the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs announced. This is an excellent opportunity for residents to renew their existing health plans or purchase new coverage if they need it.

Residents should be aware that enhanced subsidies to reduce premiums are available for eligible new and returning consumers in 2024. These subsidies were made possible by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which expanded the availability of financial assistance through the marketplace, and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which extended these benefits through 2025.

Insurance Commissioner Gordon Ito encourages consumers to shop and compare plans during this enrollment period to see if they are eligible for enhanced subsidies that could lower their premiums. He also reminds them of the importance of understanding what their health insurance policy covers and identifying current healthcare needs such as services, healthcare providers, and prescription drugs.

The deadline for enrollment in coverage that starts on January 1 is December 15. For more information on health insurance, residents can visit cca.hawaii.gov/ins/consumers/health. It’s essential to take advantage of this open enrollment period to ensure you have adequate health coverage for yourself and your family members.
