In recent years, jihadist groups such as Boko Haram have been a growing concern in the region. These extremist factions have instigated violence that has resulted in the deaths of at least 40,000 individuals and displaced approximately 2 million people in Nigeria alone.

The Nigerian military intensified airstrikes on terrorist camps along Lake Chad in response to deadly attacks on fishermen. Over the past fifteen years, jihadist groups have been a growing concern in the region. The recent offensive was triggered by a series of suicide bombings in the Nigerian town of Gwoza where 32 civilians lost their lives.
