Amazon to Cut Hundreds of Jobs in Cloud Division

Amazon has announced that it is cutting hundreds of jobs in its cloud division, following the recent elimination of about 160 advertising roles. The new cuts will primarily affect employees in Amazon Web Services (AWS), particularly in sales, marketing, and global services teams within the company.

Matt Garman, the Senior Vice President of sales and marketing at AWS, confirmed the downsizing in an email to employees. The decision to reduce roles was made to streamline the organization and focus on strategic areas that will have the most significant impact.

An AWS spokesperson emphasized that while the decisions were difficult, they are necessary for the company to continue investing in innovation for its customers. The spokesperson assured that affected employees will receive support during the transition to new roles.

News of the job cuts at AWS comes shortly after reports of layoffs in the company’s “Just Walk Out” technology team. These layoffs are part of Amazon’s ongoing cost-cutting strategy, which has also included job reductions in its advertising, Prime Video, and healthcare units. Last year, Amazon placed several employees on performance-improvement plans as part of its restructuring efforts.

Overall, the job cuts at Amazon reflect the company’s efforts to optimize resources and focus on key areas for growth and innovation. While challenging, these decisions are aimed at ensuring Amazon’s long-term success and sustainability in the competitive tech industry.
