Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has stated that Armenia needs a new Constitution to reflect the ideas and beliefs of its people. He emphasized that power in the country belongs to the people, both de jure and de facto after the Velvet Revolution of 2018. The current Constitution is in conflict with the citizens’ feelings and disconnects them from its rules.
On Constitution Day, President Vahagn Khachatryan and National Assembly President Alen Simonyan also sent congratulatory messages, reiterating their commitment to creating a prosperous and dignified life for citizens. The US Embassy in Armenia also extended their congratulations on this day, which marks the adoption of the Constitution in 1995. Over time, it has been amended twice through referendums.
The call for a new Constitution earlier this year sparked debates and discussions within government circles as well as external sources. The Prime Minister highlighted the responsibility of continuing to strengthen the Republic of Armenia by creating an organically connected Constitution that reflects the ideals and values of its makers – the citizens themselves.
