French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has condemned the attack on government spokeswoman Prisca Thevenot and her election campaign team in Paris. On July 4, Ms. Thevenot and members of her team were attacked by four people while putting up election posters in the Meudon area of Paris. The incident has sparked outrage among French politicians and the public alike.
Ms. Thevenot, a member of President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance Party and running for re-election to the French parliament, was not injured in the attack, but another member of the group suffered a dislocated jaw. Local police intervened promptly and four suspects, including three minors, have been arrested on charges of attacking public officials with a weapon.
The incident has raised concerns about safety for political candidates during campaign season. Ms. Thevenot has expressed frustration over racist comments directed at her and her family, saying that the rise of the far-right has made her a target. The motive behind the attack is yet to be announced by French authorities.
French Prime Minister Attal took to social media to condemn the incident and reiterate his commitment to maintaining democracy in France. He wrote, “Our democracy has no place for violence and threats of violence.” This incident highlights the need for greater protection for political candidates during elections, especially in light of recent events that have seen an increase in hate speech and attacks on those holding political office.
