Black Barbershop Health Initiative scheduled for Saturday in Evansville

This Saturday, Evansville will host the annual Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative, which aims to provide free health screenings and education on chronic diseases to the community. The event is a statewide effort that recognizes the crucial role barbershops play in the health of Black men.

Black barbershops often serve as a therapy center and a place of healing for Black men, built on a relationship of trust. This makes them an ideal setting for providing health screenings and education to encourage preventative medical care. Statistics from the Indiana Department of Health show that Black men in Indiana have the highest mortality rate of any group, and prostate cancer is more prevalent among Black men than any other racial or ethnic group.

Recognizing these health disparities, the Black Barbershop Health Initiative provides accessible health resources to the community. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at seven participating locations in Evansville, including Fila’s Designs, Jerald’s Barbershop, The Dapper Man’s Parlor, Lynch’s House of Coiffure, Going Forward Barber & Beauty Shop, Super Fresh, and Chinnos. This initiative is an important opportunity for Black men in the community to prioritize their health and well-being.
