Breaking the Stigma: EU Launches Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health during European Mental Health Week

The European Union is taking a proactive approach to mental health this week, as it marks the start of European Mental Health Week. This year’s theme is “co-creation,” highlighting the importance of collaboration in developing and implementing policies and programs that support positive mental health.

Despite advancements in healthcare, mental health issues continue to impact millions of people across Europe. From teenagers addicted to screens and social media to elderly people feeling isolated, there are stories of individuals struggling with mental health problems. Factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian war in Ukraine, climate change, rising energy costs, and the cost of living have all had long-term impacts on people’s mental well-being.

In response to these challenges, the EU has launched a comprehensive approach to mental health, aimed at breaking down stigma surrounding mental health and promoting well-being. Key initiatives include early interventions and support, developing EU guidance on stigma and discrimination, investing €11 million from the EU4Health program to address gaps in services, and training healthcare professionals to provide better mental health care. Additionally, €10 million has been allocated to support vulnerable groups like children and refugees.

The EU recognizes that mental health issues can have significant economic costs for individuals and society as a whole. In children and young people alone, the annual cost is estimated at €50 billion. By fostering collaboration between different stakeholders and breaking down silos within government agencies and civil society organizations, the EU aims to achieve better mental health outcomes for all citizens.

For more information about European Mental Health Week or any other related topics, please refer to resources provided by the EU Commissioner Kyriakides or visit their website for factsheets on their approach to mental health as well as guidelines for policymakers and educators.

It is important that we all take responsibility for our own mental wellbeing while working towards creating an inclusive environment that supports positive mental health for everyone.
