The Denver Broncos have signed Cody Barton to a one-year contract, following in the footsteps of their previous signing of Alex Singleton. Singleton, who had made a name for himself on special teams, was signed as a key player on special teams and linebacker. Barton has a similar background, with 24 starts over the last two years and over 1,200 career snaps on special teams.
Broncos coach Sean Payton spoke about Barton’s signing on May 30, highlighting that Barton will have an opportunity to start for the first time in his career. Payton noted Barton’s strengths on special teams and his potential impact at the linebacker position. Barton played 93% of the Washington Commanders’ defensive snaps last season, showing his versatility and ability to contribute on defense.
As Barton joins the Broncos, he will have a chance to compete for a starting role alongside Singleton. With players like Jonas Griffith in the mix, Barton will need to prove himself in training camp and preseason to earn the starting job. Following Singleton’s success and contract extension, Barton will aim to make a similar impact and solidify his place in the Broncos’ defense. The team is hopeful that Barton can build on his strong performance from last season and become a key contributor in the upcoming year.
