Wang Xinyu stuns Jessica Pegula with incredible 2nd-round victory at Wimbledon

At Wimbledon, on Thursday, China’s Wang Xinyu made history by defeating American Jessica Pegula in the second round. Xinyu, ranked 42nd, secured her first win over a top-10 player and became the first Chinese player since 2008 to defeat a top-five player when she beat Pegula.

Pegula, the fifth seed, suffered a shocking loss to Xinyu in a close match that ended 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-1. This defeat marked the highest-seeded player to be eliminated from the tournament so far.

Reflecting on her accomplishment after the match, Xinyu mentioned how challenging it was to play against Pegula on grass but expressed happiness over her victory. She is set to face Harriet Dart in the third round at Wimbledon. Meanwhile, American Madison Keys, seeded 12th, advanced to the next round after defeating Wang Yafan 6-2, 6-2 and will play against Marta Kostyuk.

On the men’s side, Ben Shelton, the 14th seed triumphed in a hard-fought five-set match against Lloyd Harris and is scheduled to compete against Denis Shapovalov in the upcoming round.
