In April, 20 Million Italians are Traveling for Easter

According to a recent report from the Confcommercio Tourism Observatory and Swg, over 10 million Italians are preparing to embark on their Easter holidays. While approximately 2 million are still undecided due to uncertain weather conditions, they remain ready to pack their bags. In addition, another 8.5 million Italians are planning a trip for the upcoming long April 25 weekend. The total cost of these holidays is estimated at around 3.5 billion euros, or about 350 euros per person.

It’s worth noting that 85% of Italian travelers during Easter prefer destinations within Italy. However, there has been a significant increase in the number of Italians traveling abroad for Easter, with popular destinations including Spain, France, and Austria. Those who choose to stay within Italy prefer seaside locations (25%), followed by cities of art (21%) and mountains (15%).

When it comes to accommodation choices, a majority of travelers (51%) opt for hotels or bed and breakfasts, while 30% choose to stay in second homes or visit relatives and friends during the holidays. Out of those staying within Italy for Easter, nearly half (46%) plan trips outside of their own region. Popular destinations include Campania, Sicily, and Puglia in the South, as well as Emilia Romagna, Lombardy, and Tuscany in the North.

Despite concerns such as weather and international tensions, Italians remain determined to travel this Easter season. Confcommercio president Carlo Sangalli emphasizes that April offers promising growth opportunities for tourism due to its combination of Easter and long weekends. However, he also stresses the importance of supporting families’ spending capacity through tax reform in order for tourism to continue thriving in Italy.
