EE Introduces Energy-Efficient ‘Cell Sleep’ Technology Nationwide in UK

EE has recently unveiled the implementation of its new ‘cell sleep’ technology on its 4G network, aimed at reducing energy consumption significantly. By using machine learning to analyze usage patterns at each site, EE can schedule specific 4G LTE carriers to enter a low-power mode during periods of decreased demand. This innovative technology allows sites to quickly return to full power within seconds if demand unexpectedly rises. In instances of extremely low demand, such as late at night, sites can enter a ‘deep sleep’ mode to further conserve energy.

This move by EE is expected to save up to 2 KWh per site daily, which equates to an impressive 4.5 million KWh annually across its network. Greg McCall, BT’s Chief Networks Officer, highlighted the potential for notable energy savings by aligning power usage with network demand. He acknowledged that implementing cell sleep technology at over 19,500 sites is a significant step in managing the increase in data consumption.

The idea of adjusting a mobile site’s power consumption based on real-time demand is gaining recognition in the industry. Advances in AI and machine learning have facilitated the adoption of these technologies. Ericsson has demonstrated its sleep mode technology with Deutsche Telekom, showcasing the growing interest and potential advantages of energy-efficient solutions.
