Egypt’s New Foreign Minister Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza, Reiterates International Law and Pressure on Israel

Badr Abdel Aati, Egypt’s new Foreign Minister, has addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza by stating that Cairo is actively working to reach a deal that would involve a ceasefire and the exchange of hostages and prisoners between Israel and Hamas. This marks the foreign minister’s first remarks on the Gaza crisis since the new government was sworn in on Wednesday.

During a phone call with the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, Abdel-Ati expressed concern over Israel’s unilateral actions in the occupied West Bank, such as settlement expansions, arrest campaigns, and systematic raids on Palestinian areas. He emphasized the importance of pressuring Israel to halt its actions and adhere to international law.

Abdel-Ati highlighted the significance of reopening the Rafah crossing, which is contingent upon Israel’s willingness to withdraw from the area and allow Palestinians to resume control. He also called for disengagement rules to support humanitarian organizations and ensure their safety in Gaza.

The foreign minister reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and compliance with international resolutions and laws. He further stressed that ongoing international efforts are necessary to provide essential humanitarian aid to Gaza residents.
