In a recent post on social media, Dick Vitale announced that he had undergone successful surgery to remove cancerous lymph nodes. The longtime college basketball announcer had recently received a biopsy that revealed the presence of cancer in his lymph node, leading to Friday’s surgery. At 85 years old and battling cancer for the fourth time, Vitale is currently recovering in the hospital.
Despite the challenges he has faced with cancer in recent years, Vitale remains optimistic and grateful for the support and prayers he has received from his fans. In a post on social media, he shared that the surgeon, Dr. Vosler, removed the cancerous lymph node and surrounding lymph nodes for further examination. Vitale is hopeful that this latest battle with cancer will be just one more setback he can overcome as he continues to share his passion for college basketball with fans.
Vitale’s first diagnosis was melanoma in 2021, followed by lymphoma a few months later. Despite these setbacks, Vitale returned to the broadcast booth after undergoing treatment and has continued to share his enthusiasm for college basketball with fans. An iconic figure in the college basketball world, Vitale has been a longtime staple at ESPN and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. Despite his health challenges, Vitale remains hopeful that he will be able to return to calling games in the future, as he misses the energy and camaraderie of college basketball events. As he continues to recover from his recent surgery, Vitale is grateful for the outpouring of support he has received from the basketball community and his colleagues at ESPN.
