Greenhouse gas emissions in the EU economy decrease by 4.0% in the fourth quarter of 2023.

In the final three months of 2023, the EU economy’s greenhouse gas emissions were estimated to be 897 million tonnes of CO2-equivalents (CO2-eq), a 4.0% decrease from the same period in 2022. Despite this reduction in emissions, the EU’s GDP remained stable with a slight increase of 0.2% compared to the same quarter in 2022.

Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, released data on quarterly greenhouse gas emissions by economic activity. These estimates complement other quarterly socio-economic data such as GDP and employment. The information provided in this article is derived from a more detailed Statistics Explained article on quarterly greenhouse gas emissions.

During this period, several sectors saw significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the same quarter in 2022. Electricity and gas supply experienced the largest reduction (-17.2%), while manufacturing had a decrease of -3.1%. Household emissions remained relatively stable during this timeframe.

Out of the 22 EU countries that experienced a decline in greenhouse gas emissions in Q4 2023, Estonia recorded the largest reduction (-17%) followed by Bulgaria (-16%) and Finland (-9%). Ten out of these countries also experienced a decline in GDP while reducing their emissions, while eleven managed to decrease their emissions while growing their GDP.

In contrast, some countries experienced an increase in greenhouse gas emissions during Q4 2023. Malta (+7%) and Slovenia (+5%) had notable increases, along with Cyprus (+1%) and Slovakia (+1%). Greece recorded a modest increase (+0%). Interestingly, all five countries with increased emissions also recorded positive growth in GDP during this period.

Overall, while there has been progress made towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions in certain sectors and countries within the EU economy, there is still room for improvement to achieve greater sustainability goals for future quarters and years ahead.
