Pine Bush Science Department’s Recommendations for Viewing the Solar Eclipse

On Monday, April 8, we in this location will have the rare opportunity to experience a near-total solar eclipse. This event will occur when the moon passes directly between the Earth and the sun, causing darkness to fall over our area at approximately 3:25 p.m.

As a unique chance for us in this location, we encourage everyone to take a moment to step outside and safely witness this phenomenon. However, it is important to note that all Pine Bush students will have a half day on Monday, April 8, with all after-school activities either canceled or rescheduled. Make sure to check with your advisor or coach for more information.

It is crucial that you do not look directly at the sun, the eclipse, or the moon during the event without proper eye protection. Approved eclipse glasses are the only safe way to view the eclipse, as looking without them can result in permanent blindness. Sunglasses, Blue Blockers, or regular glasses are not sufficient protection. Be sure to acquire approved eclipse glasses from various sources or simply enjoy the midday darkening without looking directly at the sun.

The partial solar eclipse in Orange County, New York will begin at 2:10 p.m., reaching its maximum at 3:25 p.m., and ending at 4:36 p.m., lasting for a total of 2 hours and 26 minutes. NASA’s website provides additional information on this upcoming eclipse, and solar eclipse glasses may still be available online or at local retail stores or libraries where they have been distributed for free
