Former ExxonMobil employee suffering from cancer awarded $725 million compensation

A jury in a Philadelphia court has ruled in favor of Paul Gill, a former employee suffering from a form of leukemia, ordering US oil and gas giant ExxonMobil to pay $725 million in damages. Gill, 67, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in 2019 and claims that his cancer was caused during his work as a mechanic at an ExxonMobil gas station from 1975 to 1980, where he handled kerosene and solvents without protection.

Following a week-long trial, ten of the twelve jurors found in favor of Gill, ruling on Thursday. The jury’s decision was made public on Friday, with ExxonMobil ordered to pay Gill $725 million in damages and an additional $500,000 to his wife. In response, ExxonMobil stated that it plans to appeal the verdict, calling it irrational and expressing confidence that the judgment will be overturned.
