Nine consecutive months of record-breaking heat, with February being the hottest on record

The year began with a bang as February became the hottest month in history, according to the EU’s Copernicus service. The average global temperature for February was 1.77 degrees Celsius warmer compared to pre-industrial times (1850-1900), marking the ninth consecutive record hot month in a row.

During the first half of February, global temperatures soared with four days in a row reaching up to two degrees warmer than the reference point. Sea temperatures also broke heat records worldwide, with the previous record from August being surpassed by a little over 21 degrees. Rising sea temperatures lead to more moisture in the atmosphere, resulting in stronger and more abundant rainfall.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned that global warming is likely to exceed the critical 1.5-degree limit permanently in the early part of the next decade. This highlights the urgent need for action to mitigate the impacts of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
