From Addiction to Anxiety: The U.S. Surgeon General’s Call to Caution on Social Media Use for Young Users

The U.S. Surgeon General has called on Congress to consider putting warning labels on social media platforms, particularly for users under 18. These warnings would disclose the mental health risks associated with social media use, ranging from depression to impacting the nervous system, resulting in a disconnect between teenagers and their surroundings.

WSBT 22’s Kyland Hall delved into the addictive nature of social media and how this addiction can contribute to anxiety and distorted perceptions. Neuroscience experts explain how dopamine, a feel-good hormone, is released when engaging in pleasurable activities, leading to a desire for more of such experiences. However, for individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions such as depression, platforms like social media can exacerbate cognitive distortions, amplifying negative perceptions of the world and heightening symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Nancy Michael, the Director of Neuroscience and Behavior at Notre Dame, highlights the risks of habitual use and how these platforms can interfere with the normal growth and functioning of the nervous system, ultimately affecting cognitive development. Many students are observed to make extreme choices related to social media, either opting to disengage completely or succumbing to the addictive nature of these platforms, leading to sleep deprivation and negative impacts on mental health.

It is important for lawmakers to consider the potential risks associated with social media use, particularly for young users. By implementing warning labels and increasing awareness about the mental health impacts of these platforms, steps can be taken to mitigate the negative effects and promote healthier digital habits among individuals of all ages.
