How war has impacted science in Ukraine

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has had a devastating impact on the scientific community, with significant damage to scientific institutions and the loss of lives among Ukrainian scientists. In recent years, more than one-third of scientific institutions have been destroyed or damaged, forcing many researchers and university teachers to shift to remote work.

A recent study conducted by UNESCO in March 2024 sheds light on the extent of the damage to Ukraine’s science sector and its repercussions over the past two years. The study, carried out by the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, serves as a crucial first step in developing an emergency recovery plan for Ukraine’s public science sector in light of the ongoing conflict.

The study highlights the urgent need for support and resources to rebuild and revitalize the sector. It is clear that concerted efforts are required to mitigate the damage done and ensure the continued advancement of science in the country. With a shrinking budget for scientific work, cuts in staff salaries, part-time work, and even suspension of employment have impacted productivity in the field of science.
