Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman’s name may not be well-known, but his role in Super Bowl LVIII will forever be etched in the annals of NFL history. Hardman was the recipient of the game-ending touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes that sealed the victory for Kansas City in overtime.
However, what is less known about the NFL’s playoff overtime rules is that if a team that receives the kickoff scores a touchdown, both teams are guaranteed a possession. This was the case in Super Bowl LVIII, and despite this rule being in place, Hardman had no idea that he had just scored the winning touchdown.
Mahomes shared a humorous story about the moment, recalling that he had to inform Hardman in the end zone that they had just won after throwing a touchdown pass to him to end the game. Despite not celebrating initially, Hardman has since become an integral part of Kansas City’s championship history.
