Science Teachers Guide Students to Success at Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Fair

Northbrook Junior High School (NBJH) science research students and their teachers recently received a total of 23 awards, including 18 golds and 5 silvers, at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Fair in Decatur. The group showcased their dedication and hard work in the field of science.

The NBJH offers a semester-long course for students to pursue research projects following the scientific method. Teachers Lauren Johnson, Fred Yoon, and Amber Paull play a crucial role in guiding students through their projects and helping them develop their scientific skills. They were proud of their students’ achievements and expressed their appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

During the school science fair, 7th and 8th-grade students presented their research and findings to a panel of judges who evaluated their work based on the Illinois Jr. Academy of Science rubric. Students who received a silver or gold award had the opportunity to advance to regional and state science fairs.

The teachers involved in the project were impressed by the students’ love of science, curiosity, and ability to work effectively as a team. The skills acquired through Independent Science Research will undoubtedly benefit the students as they continue their education in high school.

Several students received special recognition for their outstanding projects during the state fair. Henry Gartz and Simon Pick received EPIC awards, while Maggie Griffith, Eric McCaughan, and Gia Swinger were awarded Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge Awards.
