The cooperative economy may provide a sustainable solution for a flawed system

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and my time in lockdown in northern Italy, I took a moment to reflect on the teachings I had been imparting to my MBA and executive students for many years. The current global situation, marked by inequalities, the dominance of a few major platforms, ineffective economic policies, depletion of natural resources, social unrest, and the economic devastation caused by the pandemic, led me to question the effectiveness of our economic system. It seemed clear to me that the existing framework was broken and no longer serving its intended purpose.

As a business school professor, I felt compelled to explore how educators like myself could address these issues and contribute to creating a more sustainable and equitable economic system. It became apparent that our economic system had become entrenched, allowing a few well-informed actors, such as the Big Tech companies and their platforms, to exploit the system for their benefit at the expense of others. This exploitation had severe repercussions for both the well-being of individuals and the planet as a whole.

I realized that it was not enough for us to simply observe these problems from afar or criticize them; we needed to take action. As educators, we have a responsibility to equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need to make a positive impact on society and create a more just world. This meant not only teaching them about traditional business practices but also introducing them to innovative solutions that address social and environmental challenges.

I began exploring different approaches that could help create a more sustainable and equitable economy. One approach was to encourage businesses to adopt more environmentally friendly practices by incentivizing them with tax breaks or other financial rewards. Another approach was to promote entrepreneurship in underserved communities by providing access to capital and mentorship opportunities.

As I continued my research into these issues, I became increasingly convinced that educators had an important role to play in shaping the future of our economy. By equipping students with new knowledge and skills, we could help them become agents of change who could drive positive change in their communities.
