Iran’s Presidential Elections: From the First Round to the Second, and Beyond

The Islamic Republic of Iran will hold the second round of early presidential elections on July 5, following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a plane crash on May 19. In the first round held on June 28, Masoud Pezeshkian and conservative Said Jalili emerged as the top candidates. While Pezeshkian received about 42% of the votes, Jalili received about 39%.

However, there are doubts about the accuracy of the official turnout figures, with some suggesting it could have been much lower. The conservative candidate has a better chance in the second round as voters who supported other conservative politicians in the first round have no alternative. The voter turnout in the second round will play a crucial role in determining the outcome.

Iran’s president is formally the head of state, but in reality, the country is ruled by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The outcome of this election will significantly impact Iran’s future direction.
