Alarming Report on Israel’s Health System Ranking at the Bottom of OECD Countries

According to a recent report, Israel has lower hospital bed rates compared to the average in developed countries. Specifically, Israel had 2.1 general ward hospital beds per thousand people in 2022, which is below the OECD average of 2.4. This puts Israel fourth from the bottom in this category, with South Korea leading the way with 7.3 beds per thousand inhabitants. In terms of psychiatric hospitalization beds, Israel has only 0.3 beds per thousand people, which is also below the OECD average of 0.5 and lower than countries like South Korea and Belgium’s higher averages of 1.3 beds each. However, Israel plans to add an additional 1,790 general hospital beds in the next five years, bringing the total number of general hospital beds to around 17,500. Additionally, there will be a total of 645 new medical students who will graduate as specialist doctors in all fields and regions of the country by 2031.

Minister of Health Uriel Bosso stated that Israel is currently undergoing a complex period but that efforts are being made to improve healthcare services and provide better quality medical care to its citizens.

Director General Moshe Bar Siman Tov emphasized that adding more beds was necessary for improving medical services in Israel and increasing accessibility to healthcare services for its citizens.

In conclusion, despite having lower hospital bed rates compared to other developed countries, Israel has taken steps towards improving its healthcare system by adding more hospital beds and increasing accessibility to medical care for its citizens.
