CBS Sports pinpoints potential obstacle for Chiefs in 2024

The Kansas City Chiefs had an incredible season, winning their second straight Super Bowl despite having one of their weakest teams during the Patrick Mahomes era. The defense was the strongest it had ever been while Mahomes was in Kansas City. However, the team had to make tough decisions during the offseason, one of which was trading L’Jarius Sneed to Tennessee, impacting their cornerback depth.

Despite the loss of Sneed, the Chiefs have a history of success under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Trent McDuffie has become a lockdown starter early in his career, providing stability in the secondary. Joshua Williams, a fourth-round pick in 2022, has been a valuable depth piece for the team during their recent Super Bowl runs.

According to Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, the Chiefs’ cornerback depth is now their biggest red flag due to Sneed’s departure. However, Benjamin noted that if Trent McDuffie hadn’t emerged as a versatile starter in the secondary, Sneed wouldn’t have been traded. The spotlight now falls on new running mate Joshua Williams, who has only six career starts under his belt and puts pressure on the safeties.

The t-shirts worn by the defense that read “In Spags We Trust” reflect the confidence the team has in their coaching staff as they navigate this offseason and prepare for future success on and off the field.
