Lakers extend contract with Max Christie at start of free agency period

The Lakers have secured a four-year, $32 million contract with Max Christie to prevent him from becoming a free agent, according to sources not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. Christie, who averaged 4.2 points in his second season with the team, is seen as an important part of the organization’s developmental plan.

The Lakers have high hopes for Christie to make a significant impact on both ends of the court as he enters his third season after being selected 35th in the 2022 NBA draft. Despite seeing consistent rotation minutes in a 20-game stretch last season, his playing time was reduced once the team signed Spencer Dinwiddie in free agency and Gabe Vincent returned from injury. Christie did not play for the Lakers during the postseason.

While Christie’s role on the team was a concern last season, he is now viewed as an important part of the Lakers’ plans moving forward. With LeBron James expected to re-sign with the team after declining his contract option, the Lakers are looking to reshape their roster through trades and possibly free agency with additional salary-cap space.

Despite this focus on making changes, the Lakers are also focused on developing young players like Christie as they look to build a competitive roster moving forward. With 15 players on the roster already, including James, the Lakers are still looking for ways to add depth and talent to their squad.
