In the heart of Kentucky, a new small business has opened its doors to the public. Sweaty Glass, owned by Shane Spickard, is the second of its kind in the state and specializes in the art of glass blowing.
Spickard’s passion for glass blowing began when he attended the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tennessee. He fell in love with the art form and has been honing his skills ever since. Now, he has transformed a garage into his own glass making factory where he creates beautiful glass cups, vases, and other decorations using melted glass.
The process of creating these stunning pieces is intricate and mesmerizing. Spickard heats the glass until it reaches a molten state, adds colorful frit to create unique designs, and sculpts each piece using various tools such as tweezers and jacks. He even uses wet newspaper to shape some of his vases, adding an extra touch of creativity to his work. After smoothing out each piece with a torch, Spickard blows air through a blowpipe to help inflate and shape the final product.
Sweaty Glass is located at 144 W 10th Avenue in Bowling Green and offers classes for anyone interested in learning the art of glass blowing. Whether you’re looking to create your own unique piece or simply want to learn more about this fascinating craft, Sweaty Glass is sure to offer something for everyone!
