BLM seeks feedback on proposed forest health project near Newcastle

The Newcastle Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management, in partnership with the Wyoming State Forestry Division, is currently seeking public input on a project aimed at enhancing forest health and resiliency, improving firefighter response, and increasing public access. Located approximately six miles northeast of Newcastle, Wyo., near the South Dakota border, the Sheldon Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) Project area is at risk of wildfires and insect infestations due to excessive tree density and understory growth.

The proposed project involves commercial thinning of forest stands through timber sales and improvement projects. The goal is to reduce the risk of stand-replacing fires and insect infestations while also enhancing access to the area from Beaver Stockade County Road. Improving access will benefit both the public and firefighters responding to emergencies.

The preliminary environmental assessment for the Sheldon GNA Project is now available online, with a comment period ending on April 30. Comments can be submitted through the project website or by mailing them to the BLM Newcastle Field Office. Good Neighbor Authority allows states, counties, and tribes to conduct projects on federal lands to achieve specific land management goals, and the BLM is working with various partners to improve forest health in the Newcastle Field Office area.

For more information or to provide feedback on this collaborative effort between different agencies and organizations, individuals can contact the Newcastle Field Office directly. This project aims to protect and improve forest health for all stakeholders involved.
