OU Health Heart Surgeons Ready to Perform First Child Heart Transplant in Oklahoma

OU Health has been recognized as one of the best child heart surgery programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Thanks to the leadership of Dr. Harold Burkhart, who arrived at the hospital about 10 years ago, the hospital now performs complex surgeries for children in need and is expanding their services to include heart transplants for children in need.

One Oklahoma child has been added to a national transplant list and will be able to stay in Oklahoma City when a new heart becomes available. Dr. Burkhart and his team have worked tirelessly to establish a program for children in need of heart transplants, and OU Health was recently approved for such a program. This marks a significant milestone for the hospital and paves the way for future transplants, ensuring that children in Oklahoma have access to life-saving procedures close to home.

Dr. Burkhart is proud of the progress that has been made in establishing this program and is dedicated to providing the best possible care for children in need. Hundreds of children who previously had to seek treatment out of state can now receive care close to home, thanks to his leadership and dedication.
