Racial and Ethnic Groups Experience Greater Health Disparities Due to Unmet Needs, CDC Study Finds

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released a study highlighting the negative impact of unmet social and economic needs on racial and ethnic groups’ health. Dr. Karen Hacker, head of the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, explained that the study surveyed adults nationwide to identify five specific needs, such as social connections and food security.

The study revealed that disparities in chronic diseases across the country disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minorities. Dr. Hacker emphasized the importance of recognizing the external challenges faced by people, especially those in low-income communities and diverse racial backgrounds.

To gain a more comprehensive understanding of these health disparities at the state level, a random survey was conducted in 42 states, including Arizona. The survey will provide more state-specific data at the individual level. Dr. Hacker stressed the need for collaboration between communities and policymakers to address these health disparities effectively.

ASU professor Zach Cordell believes that having diverse perspectives involved in discussions around healthcare solutions is crucial. He hopes that taking a holistic approach to care will lead to actionable steps to remove barriers to improved health outcomes as outlined in the study.

The CDC’s study highlights the importance of addressing social and economic needs to improve overall health outcomes for all individuals, but especially those from marginalized communities. By gaining a better understanding of how these needs affect health, policy solutions can be developed to improve care and reduce disparities in chronic diseases across the country.
