Architectural firm defends decision to keep science centre open

The Ontario Science Centre’s roof repair needs are not as dire as the provincial government has announced. In a statement, the firm of architect Raymond Moriyama, who designed the Science Centre, believes that the repairs can be managed and has offered its services pro bono to assist with them.

Moriyama Teshima Architects expressed shock at the decision to permanently close the science centre. Surma explained that the closure timing was due to the upcoming risk of snow weight on the roof by October 31, and employees need time to decommission the building and move exhibits out before then. Even before the abrupt closure announcement, the government had plans to relocate the science centre from its current location in east Toronto to a redeveloped Ontario Place on the waterfront.
