Predicting Solar Corona Before Eclipse Using NASA Data

Predictive Science researchers have developed a model that uses real-time measurements of the Sun’s changing magnetic field to forecast solar eruptions. The model, created through an automated process, converts raw data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) into insights about how magnetic flux and energy are injected into the corona over time.

This dynamic element allows for more accurate predictions as the corona evolves, leading to solar eruptions. Prior to this innovation, the model relied on a static snapshot of the surface magnetic field, which was not ideal for keeping up with the Sun’s ever-changing activity. In earlier iterations of the model, researchers had to manually analyze extreme ultraviolet activity in order to determine which areas of the Sun needed to be energized.

The team at Predictive Science has now integrated continuous updates of the magnetic field into their model, allowing for a more accurate representation of the Sun’s activity during periods of heightened solar activity like the current one. The team is optimistic about this year’s model and believes it will accurately predict solar eruptions.
