Science teacher from Hillsborough County named as a finalist for Florida Teacher of the Year

In February, Clayton Nylund, a science teacher at Blake High School in Hillsborough County, was named Hillsborough Teacher of the Year. The Florida Department of Education and Hillsborough County School District leaders surprised Nylund with the announcement in class, praising his ability to make physics and engineering courses popular among students.

Nylund, who joined the district in 2011, teaches physics and engineering. He introduced a Principles of Technology course in 2019, allowing students to engage in hands-on projects involving research, design, building, testing, and competing. Students work on projects like pinewood derby cars, catapults, rockets, bridges, and mousetrap cars while learning about circuits, coding, programming, and robotics.
