Pill robot with camera and body-traversing ability seeks to eliminate the need for endoscopy

A new medical test that is both invasive and uncomfortable for many people, such as endoscopy, may soon be replaced by a robot pill. Developed by American company Endiatx, the PillBot pill has undergone over 50 versions to reach its current size as a pill and is now in the clinical trial phase.

To get to this stage, the company obtained $7 million in funding and the creator, Torrey Smith, tested the prototype over 43 times. The PillBot-robot is currently in phase 3 of clinical trials with the goal of making gastroenterology diagnoses more accessible, convenient, and cost-effective. It’s expected to hit stores by 2026.

The PillBot-like robot has a unique multi-pump propulsion system that enables it to move in different directions by emitting harmless fluid jets. It also features a camera that transmits high-resolution video and LED lights, allowing doctors to follow the transmission wirelessly. The device can take advantage of the body’s natural movements to enter the digestive system and is equipped with artificial intelligence to maneuver autonomously.

If successful, this innovative approach to medical testing could offer an early and effective detection method for various gastrointestinal conditions, providing patients with a less invasive and more comfortable option in the future.
