Statistics from Israel’s Central Social Security Center reveal that 22 out of every thousand children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, in 2022 there were 57,233 people living in Israel diagnosed on the autism spectrum. That’s approximately 5.9 people for every 1,000 of the population (or one in 167). Among those diagnosed, 77% were male and 81% were under 18 years of age. Additionally, 92% of those diagnosed were Jewish. Among Jewish individuals, 42% were children of an Ashkenazi father while 26% were children of a Sephardic father. Furthermore, over half (46%) of those diagnosed had at least one additional disability in addition to their autism diagnosis. And astonishingly, almost all (9%) had two or more additional diagnoses.

The number of diagnoses has been steadily increasing over the past two decades, from just under five per thousand among those born in 2000 to over twenty-two per thousand among those born in 2018. The rate of diagnosis has also increased significantly among different populations. For example, among Jewish boys it rose from ten per thousand to thirty-eight per thousand between the same time periods while among Jewish girls it increased from three per thousand to thirteen per thousand among Arab boys it rose from one per thousand to fifteen per thousand and among Arab girls it jumped from zero to five per thousand. It should be noted that these figures indicate improvements in diagnostic methods and increased awareness among parents as well as other factors contributing to this increase such as socioeconomic status and access to healthcare resources.

It’s important for parents and caregivers of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to be aware of these statistics and how they may impact their loved ones lives. With such a high prevalence rate in Israel, it is crucial for families and communities alike to support early identification and appropriate interventions for individuals with ASD.
