The conflict between Ukraine and Russia may reignite in the near future, as the G-7 countries have committed to providing military support to Ukraine. During a recent meeting, it was clear that the US-led EU was firmly behind Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his fight against Russia.
In response to this support, France has planned to deploy troops and the UK has supplied Storm Shadow missiles with a range of 300 km. The US has provided High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to target Russian forces in Crimea. These actions come as part of a USD 50 billion aid package from the US-led EU and USD 225 million in US-approved military hardware.
During the G-7 summit in Apulia, President Zelensky managed to secure support from major western powers, including India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Zelensky to discuss the situation in Ukraine and also had a meeting with US President Joe Biden, who assured India of Washington’s commitment to a strong relationship. Additionally, Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where they discussed tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.
The global situation is becoming increasingly unstable as Russia continues its aggressive actions towards Ukraine. The conflict may intensify once again if the G-7 countries continue to provide military hardware and financial support to Ukraine. The possibility of nuclear weapons being used if Russian sovereignty is threatened cannot be ignored.
