Russia’s Diplomatic Dance in the Middle East: Navigating Tensions with Yemeni Houthis and Hamas

Mikhail Bogdanov, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, recently met with a delegation of Yemeni Houthis from the Ansar Allah movement in Moscow. The delegation was led by its official representative Muhammad Abdel Salam. The meeting focused on the escalation of the situation in the Red Sea, specifically discussing the dynamics of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone and the aggravation of tensions in the region.

During this meeting, Russia’s condemnation of ongoing strikes on Yemen by the United States and Great Britain was emphasized for violating UN Charter. However, it is worth noting that Moscow does not condemn Yemeni Houthi rebels who have been attacking civilian ships in the Red Sea and launching drones and missiles towards Israel. This stance was reiterated during the discussion.

A week before meeting with Yemeni Houthis, Bogdanov received a delegation from Hamas in Moscow. Similarly, Russia does not label Hamas as terrorist organization. These interactions highlight Russia’s approach to complex political landscape in Middle East and Africa where alliances often shift based on strategic interests and regional dynamics.

It is important to understand that Russia has been cautious about involvement in conflicts in this region due to its own strategic interests and historical ties with many countries there. They have often sought to maintain neutrality while also pursuing their own objectives.

Overall, Bogdanov’s meeting with Yemeni Houthis underscores Russia’s continued engagement with various actors in Middle East and Africa despite their complex political realities.
