The Ontario Science Centre in Toronto is facing layoffs of more than 50 food service workers, announced by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union. These employees are employed by Levy Canada, an outside contractor. The layoffs will be taking place over the next few days, following the abrupt closure of the science centre last Friday afternoon due to structural problems with parts of the roof.
The closure has sparked outrage among local residents, science enthusiasts, and the architectural firm responsible for designing the building. J.P. Hornick, president of the union, criticized the government for attempting to find excuses to shut down the historic building, emphasizing the widespread support for keeping it operational. Despite this setback, the province had previously announced plans to relocate the science centre to a new location at Ontario Place, which is currently under construction. This new location will also feature a massive spa, revamped concert venue and a new marina. The decision has been met with mixed reactions from the public, with many expressing their love for the existing Science Centre and desire to see it remain in its current location.
