Scotland Struggles to Find Target in Euro 2024 Match Against Hungary, Sets New Record for Passes but Misses Shots

Scotland failed to take a shot on target in the first half of their Euro 2024 match against Hungary, marking the second time in a row that they have been unable to do so. This was despite Scotland completing 249 passes in the first half, which is a record for them in a major tournament game.

Hungary’s win against Scotland ended their eight-match streak without victory in Euro matches. The clean sheet they achieved was also their first since their 2-0 win over Austria at Euro 2016. In total, Scotland had only 17 shots at Euro 2024, making it the joint fewest by a nation in a group stage, alongside Northern Ireland at Euro 2016.

John McGinn of Scotland won five fouls during the match, which was the highest number of fouls won by a Scottish player in a major tournament game since Christian Dailly won six against Norway at the 1998 World Cup. Grant Hanley completed the most passes by any Scottish player in a major tournament game (excluding extra-time) with 69 passes against Hungary. Hanley also had more touches than any other Scottish player with four in opposition box.
