Employee of World Central Kitchen dies in Gaza

On Tuesday night, a convoy from World Central Kitchen (WCK) was unintentionally shot at by Israel, leading to the halt of their relief work in the region. The incident resulted in the death of seven WCK staff members near Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip. The Israeli army took responsibility for the attack and offered condolences to the families of the victims, promising a thorough investigation into the matter.

WCK, founded by renowned chef José Andrés, has been delivering food aid in war and crisis zones since 2010. Following the attack on their convoy, WCK temporarily suspended its operations in the region. The employees killed were from Australia, Poland, Great Britain, the US, and Palestine.

The death of WCK staff has sparked calls for accountability from various countries including Australia and Poland. The EU and USA have also urged Israel to provide clarity regarding this incident. In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel is taking measures to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.

WCK’s efforts to deliver relief supplies to Gaza via sea have been put on hold following this attack. Previously, WCK had coordinated aid deliveries to Gaza and shipped food supplies from Cyprus to Gaza before this unfortunate incident occurred. Unfortunately, it remains uncertain when these supplies will be distributed again due to WCK’s temporary suspension of activities in the region.
