MLB unveils new rules and format for 2024 Home Run Derby

The 2024 Major League Baseball All-Star Home Run Derby, set to take place on July 15 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, is set to undergo some changes. Feedback from past participants prompted these changes, as they felt that the event was moving too quickly.

One of the key changes is that players will now face a maximum of 40 pitches within each of the Derby’s three timed rounds. Previously, participants hurried through as many swings as possible within the time limit. This change aims to address concerns about the physical toll that the fast pace of the competition could potentially have on players.

While the time limits for each round remain the same, certain hitters will have the opportunity to earn bonus time by hitting particularly long home runs. This change could allow players to continue hitting until they surpass their opponent’s score, creating a more competitive atmosphere.

The format of the Derby has also been altered, with the top four first-round scores now advancing to the semifinals. In case of ties, the longest home run hit in the initial round will determine the winner.

Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson has been announced as one of the participants in this year’s Derby. Henderson, who has 26 home runs so far this season, expressed his excitement to compete in his first Home Run Derby and is aiming to put up competitive rounds.

Last year’s All-Star Home Run Derby was won by Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and fans are eagerly anticipating who will take home this year’s title in Arlington.
