Solidia Technologies and CalPortland Partner to Reduce Carbon Footprint of Cement and Concrete

Solidia Technologies, Inc. is a pioneering company in the low-carbon cement and concrete market. Recently, they entered into a technology licensing agreement with CalPortland® Company, one of the largest building materials producers in the Western United States. This arrangement allows CalPortland to license certain patents that enable up to a 50% reduction in the carbon footprint of cement and concrete. The limited licenses will permit CalPortland to use the Solidia technology in the Western US to develop low-carbon solutions. Additionally, CalPortland purchased certain lab and plant assets from Solidia.

Solidia Cement, a product offered by Solidia Technologies, is a low-limestone cement that gains strength through carbonation rather than hydration like traditional portland cement. It is made using the same raw materials and equipment as portland cement but achieves significant CO2 reductions due to lower production temperatures and reduced limestone calcination. The Carbon Reduction Team at Solidia Technologies worked with CalPortland to enter into this licensing agreement and asset purchase to achieve sustainability goals.

“We are excited about this new partnership,” stated Russell Hill, CEO of Solidia. “CalPortland’s commitment to decarbonization makes them an excellent partner for us.” Similarly, Bill Mullen, Chief Operating Officer at CalPortland expressed their focus on decarbonization opportunities stating that “Our team has been working closely with Solidia Technologies to develop these solutions and we are thrilled about the opportunity to continue this work”.

Following the divestiture to CalPortland, Solidia plans to continue working with licensing partners to provide its low-carbon solutions derived from over 300 patents and patent applications globally.
