Maternal Substance Use Disorder Program Available at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center

At Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, a comprehensive Maternal Substance Use Disorder Program is available to support pregnant women struggling with addiction. This program offers a holistic approach to care, including medication, behavioral therapy, and social support services.

Dr. John Dougherty, an obstetrician-gynecologist, launched the program in 2023 in response to the Pennsylvania Perinatal Quality Collaborative’s focus on neonatal abstinence syndrome and substance use disorder in pregnant women. The program aims to provide evidence-based, person-directed treatment for all aspects of addiction and pregnancy care in one convenient location.

The Maternal Substance Use Disorder Program provides coordinated care and services closely linked to ensure quality care and rapid provision of services. The program has helped many women and their babies over the years by optimizing maternal and neonatal outcomes. Its mission is to become central Pennsylvania’s trusted source for evidence-based treatment during pregnancy and achieve healthy family goals by applying the latest research in this field.
