Jasmine Paolini had a remarkable run at Wimbledon, making it to the fourth round for the first time in her career. Her impressive display saw her defeat Bianca Andreescu on Court One under the roof. In the first set, both players looked evenly matched, but Andreescu was unable to sustain her level of play.
Paolini, a 28-year-old Italian player, had never won a match at Wimbledon before this year. Her journey to the second week was all the more remarkable as she had not gone beyond the second round of a Grand Slam until 2024. In the next round, she will face either Madison Keys or Marta Kostyuk.
The match between Paolini and Andreescu was a rematch of their French Open third round encounter five weeks prior, which Paolini also won in three sets. Andreescu struggled to maintain her form in the match and lost the final six games of the second set.
Delighted with her performance, Paolini said, “I think I played a good match. I tried to be aggressive because if not, I am going to have to run so much.” Meanwhile, in other matches, 19th seed Emma Navarro defeated Diana Shnaider and set up a match against either second seed Coco Gauff or Britain’s Sonay Kartal in the next round.
