Sources say AAC considering Tim Pernetti, sports executive, for next commissioner

Tim Pernetti, a seasoned executive with a wealth of experience in the college sports industry, has emerged as a top contender for the American Athletic Conference (AAC) commissioner role. Sources close to the search revealed that Pernetti is being targeted for the position, which comes after Mike Aresco retired after 11 years as the only commissioner in the conference’s history.

The AAC has undergone significant changes in recent years, with the addition of six new member schools – Rice, UTSA, North Texas, FAU, UAB and Charlotte – bringing its total to 12. The league currently boasts a lucrative television contract with ESPN that extends through the 2031-32 academic year.

Pernetti’s diverse background makes him an attractive candidate for the role. He began his career in television at CSTV before moving on to ABC Sports and ABC Enhanced TV. He also has experience as Chief Business Officer for New York City FC of Major League Soccer (MLS). Additionally, he served as athletic director at Rutgers University before departing controversially following the Mike Rice scandal.

Despite his controversial departure from Rutgers, Pernetti quickly reemerged as a prominent executive in the college sports industry. His strong television background and experience working with high-profile college searches make him well-suited for this role. With his diverse set of skills and experiences, Pernetti could be just what the AAC needs to continue its growth and success in the years to come.
