Recap of Copa América 2024: Mexico’s experiment falls short as Venezuela and Ecuador advance from Group B

Ecuador has been eliminated from Copa América after a scoreless draw with Mexico at State Farm Stadium on Sunday. The winner of Group B will advance to the quarterfinals, and this time it’s Venezuela, who won the group for just the second time ever, with their first win in 2007. This marks the first time they have won all three of their group stage matches.

Venezuela has now reached the quarterfinals at three of the last four editions of Copa América, after going out in the group stage at six straight tournaments. Salomón Rondón, Venezuela’s all-time leading scorer, scored his 43rd international goal, more than the rest of the squad combined. Jamaica is still struggling to earn a point at Copa América and is winless in nine games, with Venezuela leading the all-time matchup.

Meanwhile, Ecuador has had a history of success at Copa América but failed to make it past Mexico in their final group game. This is Mexico’s third elimination when needing a win in that match. However, it’s also Mexico’s first time being eliminated in the group stage after opening with a win. They and Ecuador have met four times in Copa América before this encounter, with Mexico leading the all-time matchup.
