Vietnamese Scientists Abroad: A Key Player in Vietnam’s Economic Growth

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh recently met with the Vietnamese community in Korea to express his hope that Vietnamese scientists abroad will play a role in the country’s development. During the meeting, representatives from the Vietnam Innovation Network in Korea also voiced their desire to support the transfer of science and technology, training, and consulting for Vietnamese startups in Korea.

Various proposals were made to improve research collaboration between domestic scientists and Vietnamese intellectuals and researchers abroad. Suggestions included the establishment of a national innovation research portal and the cooperation of Vietnamese scientists around the world to address domestic problems.

During the meeting, Mr. Dao Tuan Hung, Chairman of the Vietnam Business Association in Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized the importance of creating channels to connect and support the transfer of science and technology from Korea to Vietnam. He proposed establishing a research cooperation department and prioritizing research topics based on business needs. He also suggested setting up a fund to support scientific research and startups, operating similarly to a venture capital fund with government funding and socialization.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Huynh Thanh Dat, confirmed that the Ministry has plans to develop a decree on innovation and address obstacles in applying science, technology, and innovation to production and business in Vietnam. Funding will be provided to both domestic and international research groups to work together on finding solutions to practical issues.

Overall, Prime Minister Chinh stressed that it is crucial for overseas Vietnamese communities like those in Korea to contribute positively towards Vietnam’s development while acknowledging their significant role they have played so far in building their homeland through economic cooperation between Vietnam-Korea relations were strengthened through this visit
