Walmart Shoppers Shift Towards Delivery as More Customers Opt for Online Shopping Habits

Walmart’s CFO recently discussed how the company’s Walmart+ members are beginning to change their shopping habits, with more customers opting for delivery over pickup. This shift in behavior is mirroring the e-commerce dominance of Amazon, where shoppers make small orders on average of 72 purchases per year and spend about $37 per order. However, Walmart shoppers tend to spend more per transaction and shop less frequently, focusing on in-store shopping.

During a recent conference, Walmart’s CEO shared insights into shopper behavior based on the type of orders placed. Furner mentioned that by analyzing the ingredients and items selling well, the company can understand the intent behind customers’ purchases. Furthermore, it takes an average of four delivery orders for shoppers to fully embrace the convenience of home delivery after which shopping patterns tend to change significantly.

Walmart+ members are now making smaller, more frequent orders consisting of just one or two items, similar to Amazon customers. This trend is reflected in the increasing number of Walmart customers choosing delivery over pickup.
