Meteorology Presentation Scheduled for Science Saturday on March 30th

Michael Folmer, the warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Ocean Prediction Center in College Park, Md., is set to present at Science Saturday via Zoom on March 30, 2024, at 11 a.m. The event is organized by the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences and is open to all attendees for free.

Folmer’s presentation titled “Forecasting the Weather From the Open Ocean to the Jersey Shore” will focus on his work providing life-saving forecast products and Impact-Based Decision Support Services to various entities, including the U.S. Coast Guard, cruise lines, the cargo industry, and mariners who travel beyond 60 nautical miles offshore. He will also highlight the ongoing efforts to expand the Jersey Shore Mesonet, which consists of a network of automated weather stations, including one at LBIF.

Despite his background in tropical meteorology, Folmer has shifted his focus to satellite and mid-latitude weather in recent years. Prior to his current role at OPC, he served as the satellite liaison for various satellite programs at different weather centers. Interested individuals can register for Science Saturday lectures online through or through LBIF’s subscriber emails.
