Latvia recognized as a leader in promoting women in science and technology within the EU

The proportion of women working as scientists and engineers varies greatly depending on the sector. In the service sector, 46% of scientists and engineers are women, while in manufacturing, only 22% are women.

Among EU Member States, Latvia stands out as a leader in terms of the proportion of women employed in science and technology. This includes occupations related to scientific and technological knowledge, such as technicians or associated professionals.

In 2022, Lithuania had the highest shares of women employed in science and technology occupations among all countries, followed closely by the French region of Corse. On the other hand, the Italian regions of Nord-Ovest, Malta, and Sud recorded the smallest proportions of females employed in science and technology.

This data was released to coincide with International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th.
